Confessions of a (former) Psychic Junkie.

I’m Sarah Lassez, the author of Psychic Junkie A Memoir (written with my friend/amazing best selling author Gian Sardar) that hit the shelves in the summer of 2006, courtesy of Simon & Schuster. It was featured in a cover story of the Sunday Styles section of the The New York Times , People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, the Today Show and the Anderson Cooper show among others.

I coined the term “Psychic Junkie” and was the first person to publicly address psychic addiction.   I ran the first (and only) online support group for psychic addicts.  

I had a couple cranky clairvoyants threaten to put curses on me. I got laughed at. I wasn’t always taken seriously.   But I also helped a lot of people realize they weren’t alone.

Over the years since Psychic Junkie’s publication, people have continued to reach out to me for help.  Recently, someone reached out to me after spending 22 thousand dollars (!!!) in 7 weeks on psychic readings, only to find themselves more upset and confused!

Psychics are a billion dollar industry worldwide and in times of uncertainty, even more people turn to fortune tellers for help, hope and answers.  Unfortunately, they often find themselves broke, hopeless and more confused.

Most never try to get help because they feel alone and are too embarrassed. The psychic industry is a multi billion dollar industry worldwide -they are NOT alone!

And many educated, smart people have fallen into the trap of becoming addicted to psychic readings. I myself was raised by 2 scientific geniuses, have a degree from NYU, and have always had a healthy level of skepticism. And yet, I found myself with a raging addiction to psychic readings.

It’s Easy to Get Addicted to Psychics during a Break Up.

Many people (myself included) find themselves turning to psychic readings as a coping mechanism after a break up.  “Will he come back?”  “Will we get back together?”  “Is she thinking about me?”  “When will they contact me?” 

Unfortunately, instead of helping me gracefully move on, the psychic readings kept me stuck and even more of an emotional basket case.  I became an Olympic gold medalist in overthinking and cyber stalking.

If a psychic told me what I wanted to hear, I would feel a ‘high’, like a crystal ball-shaped sugar rush, that would last for a short amount of time before I’d crash back down into the Land of Doubt and Despair.  Then, I’d need another psychic reading or two (or 20) and end up even more upset and confused.   It was not a good scene.

Many people find themselves turning to psychics after a break up.

They’re all predicting the same thing, so it must be true!

There were times when all the psychics were predicting the same thing, so I thought, ‘it must be true!’

Nope.

In fact, many times the exact opposite happened.

Was it my guides trying to wake me up and stop me from endlessly searching for answers from strangers?

Sure, over the years, a handful of psychic predictions came true but, sadly, of the thousands of future predictions I’ve received, I’d have to say… less than 1% came true.

Not to mention, if you are getting multiple conflicting psychic readings, you have no way of knowing which one (if any) will be accurate.

And lets be real- what did getting those rare accurate predictions really get me, other than being like, ‘hmmm look at that, Visions4U was right, something bad did happen in 3 days!!!’?

Was it worth all that $$$ to be able to give Visions4U credit that one prediction came true?

Did that accurate prediction help me in any way?!

Was getting that prediction worth the anxiety it created worrying that something bad was going to happen?

Did getting that prediction actually cause that ‘something bad’ to happen like a self-fulfilling prophecy?

And what about all those “fairy tale” future predictions? The ones that fueled expectations of certain future outcomes that resulted in wasted years of waiting and hoping leading to eventual crushing disappointments?

The best and most helpful psychics were the ones who gave me real talk, tough love and advice- not predictions.  It pains me to admit this but those weren’t the psychics I kept on my favorites list back then. They didn’t make me feel good.

I preferred my fairy tales with dancing kittens and a dash of rainbow.

Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

The truth of the matter is predicting the future is hit or miss.  

Just because a psychic was accurate on one prediction or detail, doesn’t mean everything or even anything else will come true.

Even the best psychics are 50/50 (at best!) on accurately predicting future outcomes. 

This is because the future is constantly fluctuating and largely created by YOUR actions and choices.   The future is not set in stone and is impossible to predict with any real reliability.

And as infernally annoying as it can be at times, you cannot control another person’s free will.

Also, you’re not always meant to know what’s going to happen!  Sometimes you just need to live your life and let things unfold. Let life surprise you! (I know, I know…I personally hate surprises.)

What if "knowing" the future ahead of time leads you to take actions (or not take actions) that propel you down a different path toward a completely different outcome? Of course, in some situations this could be a good thing but what if your psychic prediction is something positive and “knowing” this in advance leads you to screwing it up?

For example: the trusted psychic, who has been correct on a couple things, predicts your future dream husband is 6ft tall, with dark hair and green eyes, and you're destined to meet him on a blue Monday, three years from now, through a red-headed mutual friend. She’s been right before! She has 5 star reviews!!!

So what do you do? You spend the next three years swiping left on shorter guys or avoiding dating apps altogether, because, well, you've got a date with destiny, right?

I'm exaggerating, of course, but you get my point. What if that red-headed, dream-husband-introducing friend was someone you would have met through a 5 ft 7 dude on Bumble? And that’s assuming this psychic was accurate in her prediction in the first place! My brain hurts…

Every choice you make can lead you down a different path toward a different and unforeseen future.

Me, clinging on to relationships for far too long, based on psychics insisting ‘he’s the ONE.’

I don’t really believe in having regrets, but there are some decisions I’ve made along the way based on psychic readings that lead me to wonder, ‘what if I had listened to my own intuition instead?’

There are some opportunities I let slip away, and some relationships I clung to like a koala in a eucalyptus tree for far too long, based on psychics insisting ‘he’s the ONE’.

If I could go back in time, I would definitely (gently) slap my younger self across the face and order her to trust her own instincts. I can’t do that of course, but if you’re reading this and it resonates with you, perhaps I can save you from some unnecessary heartache, missed opportunities, wasted years…and credit card debt.

Don’t even get me started on how expensive psychics are these days! When I was addicted to online psychics the most expensive ones were a crazy $5 a minute. Now it seems that’s just the average starting rate! That’s bananas!

Honestly, my favorite and most accurate psychic only charged $1 a minute. More expensive does not equal better.

Also, don’t believe the reviews.

Most people write them when they’re still on a ‘high’ from the fairy tale reading and/or are afraid to piss off the psychic and get cursed by leaving an honest review. It can be weeks, months or years before you realize a psychic prediction was wrong and by then it’s usually too late to leave a review.

And just because a psychic got it right for your neighbor's cat's second cousin twice removed, doesn’t mean they’ll get it right for you. Or just because they were right once doesn’t mean they’ll be right in future readings.

My favorite example of this: A friend of mine, I’ll call her Piña Colada, once got a reading from a psychic- and everything came true. So one year later, Piña Colada, thinking this psychic is amazing, goes back for another reading.

This time, the reading was totally off.

Zero accuracy. Nothing came true.

Ps. If a psychic mentions the C word (curse!) or says you have some dark energy around you and asks for $$$ to remove it -RUN! RUN!! RUN!!! This is the oldest psychic scam in the books. You’re fine, no curse. I promise.

I get it though, the first time a psychic said this to me, I believed them. ‘Of course, I have a curse! That makes perfect sense!’

Luckily I didn’t have extra cash at the time and a friend later set me straight and to the store to buy some sage.

After years of running the online psychic addiction support group, I witnessed countless stories similar to mine. People were desperately seeking answers outside themselves while throwing away both their money, their power, and in some cases (like mine!)- their sanity.
